Devolver Digital, the publisher behind the 2022 indie hit Cult of the Lamb, has unveiled more details about the game's upcoming "Unholy Alliance" update, which will introduce local co-op. This free update will go live on August 12 and is available to all players.
Developed by indie studio Massive Monster, Cult of the Lamb is a top-down roguelite praised as one of the best indie action-adventure games on the market. Since its release, the game has benefited from a steady flow of free content updates. In June, Massive Monster announced that the next major patch, Unholy Alliance, would finally bring a long-requested feature: local cooperative play. In a recent PlayStation Blog post, Devolver Digital's PR manager Andy Kelly explained how local co-op will work in Cult of the Lamb. Players will be able to control either the titular Lamb or a new character, the Goat, described by Kelly as "summoned by blood and born in corruption." Together, players can explore dungeons and build their cults, with some adjustments to minigames like Fishing and Knucklebones. The Lamb and Goat will also have unique cooperative dynamics, such as dealing extra damage when fighting back-to-back or landing critical hits when their attacks are perfectly timed.
In addition to local co-op, the Unholy Alliance update will introduce several other new features:
New follower traits
New quests
New structures, including the Nursery and Knucklebones Arena
New relics and tarot cards for the game's Crusades (dungeon-crawling sections)
Quality-of-life improvements, with specific details yet to be disclosed
Despite these additions, the Cult of the Lamb team has stated that there are no plans to introduce online co-op. Before the release of their critically acclaimed roguelite, Massive Monster had developed two platformers, Never Give Up and The Adventure Pals, as well as a mobile-only game called Unicycle Giraffe.
