The series also included two Winter Olympics-themed games, celebrating the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and the 2014 Sochi Olympics. However, the franchise is now reportedly discontinued.
While Mario and Sonic have historically been rivals, Sega's shift to software development in the early 2000s led to numerous collaborations between the two iconic characters. Sonic became a regular in Nintendo's Super Smash Bros series, and even starred in Mario-themed DLC for Sonic Lost World. Despite these successful partnerships, the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series appears to be officially over.
As reported by ComicBook, former Mario & Sonic developer Lee Cocker confirmed the series' end in an interview with Eurogamer. According to Cocker, the partnership between Nintendo, Sega, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was terminated, with the IOC expressing a desire to explore new directions, such as NFTs and esports, for the future of Olympic video games. The IOC has not yet made an official announcement regarding the series' cancellation.
