Guild Wars 2 is set to receive its fifth expansion on August 20, as announced by developer ArenaNet. This expansion introduces a highly anticipated feature to the long-running free-to-play MMORPG: player housing.
Titled Janthir Wilds, the expansion allows players to acquire Homesteads, which ArenaNet is touting as "the most player-friendly housing system" in an MMORPG to date. Players can customize and decorate their Homesteads and invite friends and guildmates to visit and showcase their creations.
While Homesteads are a significant highlight, the expansion also brings additional content. Players will have two new maps to explore, the Warclaw mount will be added to the game's roster, and for the first time since the game's launch, a new weapon type—the two-handed spear—will be introduced. Additionally, a new 10-man raid, along with its challenging mode, will debut after the launch as part of three major post-launch updates. These updates will also introduce another new map, additional rewards, and a new PvP mode.
The expansion is available for preorder now for $25. ArenaNet also announced that Guild Wars 2, including all previous expansions and Janthir Wilds, will be available on the Epic Games Store later this summer. Originally released in 2012, Guild Wars 2 was added to Steam in August 2022.

ArenaNet's MMORPG shows no signs of slowing down. Ahead of the Steam launch, ArenaNet reported that Guild Wars 2 player counts had doubled in recent years. In 2023, ArenaNet shifted its content development strategy to focus on smaller, more frequent expansions and major quarterly updates, rather than larger expansions with longer release cycles. This change aims to deliver content more sustainably, ensuring "the next big release" is always just a few months away.
In an expansion retrospective, Guild Wars 2 game director Josh Davis stated that the team has made "significant strides" in providing consistent game updates and supporting the MMORPG, while also promoting a better work-life balance for developers. However, Davis acknowledged that there is still room for improvement.
