As peculiar as the mash-up may seem, pitting cowboys against the supernatural is not a new idea for video games. Before we started playing this, we admit we got it confused with the Hard West franchise – until we released we were actually mixing it up with West Of Dead. Or maybe it was Weird West? Add in Darkwatch and Red Dead Redemption’s Undead Nightmare and that is a lot of cowboys fighting a lot of monsters.
It's worth mentioning that Evil West does some things well in terms of assets, lighting, environmental design and rendering quality, with beautiful environments that stretch from sandy deserts to snowed-in summits and damp catacombs. This is very much an Unreal Engine 4 game - expect a heavy reliance on baked lighting within fairly static environments - but I love the way the visuals often come together.
Combat in Evil West primarily revolves around Jesse's gauntlet, but he has plenty of other helpful tools at his disposal as well. Jesse's arsenal of vampire-killing weaponry grows as the game goes on, which in turn adds more depth to combat encounters and gives players endless options when it comes to killing monsters. In the later stages of the game, players can string together incredible combos by utilizing a mix of Jesse's gauntlet attacks with shots from his revolver, shotgun, rifle, and various other weapons he gets his hands on.
The old school, Xbox 360 feeling of the game extends to the severely underwritten storyline, involving vampires trying to take over the US and an ineffective government response that is almost entirely dependent on your player character, Jesse Rentier. He’s your typically laconic video game protagonist, who has little to say about any of the mind-bending things he sees and does, other than to occasionally make an attempt at a lame one-liner.
This is clearly a cross-gen project and a keen eye will spot all kinds of concessions to 2013-era hardware. Asset quality, for instance, looks good for the most part but there is slightly chunky geometry and low-resolution textures in places. This is par for the course for most games, but no particular effort seems to have been invested into making these areas well-suited for a ninth-generation console.
Evil West has no loot boxes or season passes. It doesn't bog the experience down with tedious side content or superfluous online features. It delivers a straightforward action-adventure game that lets players kill monsters as a cowboy vampire hunter in the Wild West. It's a kind of game that's difficult to come by in today's gaming industry, and so it stands out more than one would expect.
For the first few hours Evil West is a pretty good game but by the end of it you’ll have wished it all wrapped up a lot sooner than it does. If it could’ve found a way to evolve the gameplay and exploration, that would’ve been something – or at least conjured up a script that didn’t have you squirming in embarrassment with every line uttered. The good news is that at least there are plenty of other cowboy vs. vampires games you could try and sink your teeth into, as this one lacks bite.
